Brief history and context of establishment:

Standalone department of anthropology was established in 2016.  Nonetheless, a combined department of anthropology/sociology was established in 1985 to teach undergraduate courses of anthropology. The students had to study anthropology together with the course contents of sociology discipline. A two-year master degree program in anthropology was started in 1997 together with sociology in which students had to study both anthropology and sociology courses together. However, anthropology degree was awarded to the students who studied two specialized courses and did dissertation in Anthropology stream in II year.
Currently, anthropology department has both 4 years BA and two-year master degree programs. The MA and BA programs are being operating under semester and yearly system respectively.  The department of anthropology comprises faculties, students, and staff engaged in the teaching, research and application of knowledge in every major area of the discipline. The anthropology department is producing qualified manpower having post graduate and graduate degree in anthropology. 

Vision

Anthropology is the study of human diversities across time and space. Our vision is to provide our students with an informed theoretical and methodological understanding of human universals, differences and diversities, so that students become capable to capture and analyze the conditions, voices and dynamics within cultures and communities in Nepal and abroad. Our long-term vision is developing anthropology department as a center of excellence to produce competent human resources to address and analyze the emerging and enduring issues associated with socioeconomic and cultural differences and diversities in Nepal.

Mission

We provide a stimulating, practical and competent curriculum with sound teaching methods along with innovative & effective teaching aids that help students develop a deeper understanding and perspectives of the diversity and complexity of the human experience culturally, biologically, and historically. We teach students the scientific, interpretative and critical skills needed to conduct theoretically sound, methodologically rigorous and multifaceted analyses of human social and cultural phenomena at both the local and global levels.  Through dissertation and other departmental researches, we engage our faculties and students in innovative anthropological research and scholarship that contributes widening our understanding about the emerging and enduring issues associated with socioeconomic and cultural differences and diversities in Nepal.

Department of Anthropology at Patan Multiple Campus

Patan Multiple Campus is one of the largest campuses of Nepal under Tribhuvan University. It is the only constituent campus of T.U in Lalitpur district, the second largest city in the Kathmandu Valley. It was formally founded in 1954 before the establishment of Tribhuvan University, and it was then named "Patan Inter College". Now, it has several Master Level Programs and private programs under the management of Patan Multiple Campus. It has three faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, and Science.  Under humanities & social sciences, there are several Master's Level programs like Anthropology, Economics, Population, English, Rural Development, Sociology, and Nepali.
The Department of Anthropology, Patan Multiple Campus offers 4 semesters of M.A. classes and a B.A. with a duration of 4 years. The students have to pursue research based on sociocultural, linguistic, and archeological anthropology which is all about the origin, evolution, and diversity of the human species as well as its relationship to other primates and human culture, and civilization both in their traditional and contemporary forms, origin, growth and development of the culture in the past, along with practical which includes field study and research work. The students are also taught about research design, application of research methods, tools, and techniques of data collection by using various contemporary methods.
