The students had to study anthropology together with the course contents of sociology discipline. A two-year master degree program in anthropology was started in 1997 together with sociology in which students had to study both anthropology and sociology courses together. However, anthropology degree was awarded to the students who studied two specialized courses and did dissertation in Anthropology stream in II year.

Anthropology is the study of human diversities across time and space. Our vision is to provide our students with an informed theoretical and methodological understanding of human universals, differences and diversities, so that students become capable to capture and analyze the conditions, voices and dynamics within cultures and communities in Nepal and abroad. Our long-term vision is developing anthropology department as a center of excellence to produce competent human resources to address and analyze the emerging and enduring issues associated with socioeconomic and cultural differences and diversities in Nepal.
We provide a stimulating, practical and competent curriculum with sound teaching methods along with innovative & effective teaching aids that help students develop a deeper understanding and perspectives of the diversity and complexity of the human experience culturally, biologically, and historically. We teach students the scientific, interpretative and critical skills needed to conduct theoretically sound, methodologically rigorous and multifaceted analyses of human social and cultural phenomena at both the local and global levels. Through dissertation and other departmental researches, we engage our faculties and students in innovative anthropological research and scholarship that contributes widening our understanding about the emerging and enduring issues associated with socioeconomic and cultural differences and diversities in Nepal.
